Inscription of the Trans-Isthmus Colonial Route of Panama on the UNESCO World Heritage List

The Regional World Heritage Institute in Zacatecas (RWHIZ) celebrates the inscription of Panama's Trans-Isthmus Colonial Route on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as part of the cultural legacy associated with the transcontinental exchange systems developed during Spanish rule in the Americas.

This route was part of the Royal Intercontinental Route, a strategic trade and transportation network that between the 16th and 19th centuries connected regions as diverse as Spain, the Caribbean, continental America, the Philippines, and more than twenty present-day countries.

Its role as a hub for the exchange of goods, people, ideas, religions, and colonial structures was key to the development of the so-called "New World" and the consolidation of the Spanish Empire.

The inscription of this site recognizes its Outstanding Universal Value as a tangible testimony to a time of profound global transformations and underscores the significance of the Isthmus of Panama as a historical connection between oceans, cultures, and continents.

Congratulations!
