The Wixirika route on the UNESCO World Heritage List
The Regional World Heritage Institute in Zacatecas (RWHIZ) welcomes the inscription of the Wixárika Route through the sacred sites to Wirikuta on the UNESCO World Heritage List, approved on July 12, 2025, during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, France.
The route has been recognized as a Living Cultural Itinerary of Outstanding Universal Value and inscribed as a serial property, including components distributed across five Mexican states: Nayarit, Durango, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and San Luis Potosí.
This international recognition honors the Wixárika people as ancestral custodians of one of the oldest and most enduring spiritual traditions in Mesoamerica.
With this inscription, Mexico reaches a total of 36 sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, consolidating its position as one of the countries with the greatest representation on this prestigious list, a key instrument of the 1972 Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Congratulations!
