First World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Workshop: Improving Visitor Management and Community Engagement
The First Workshop on World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism: Improving Visitor Management and Community Engagement was held on July 17 and 18, 2024, in Oaxaca, Mexico. UNESCO is organizing the workshop as part of the project "Latin America and the Caribbean: Capacity Building for Resilient Communities through Sustainable Tourism and Heritage Safeguarding," an initiative supported by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The Regional World Heritage Institute in Zacatecas participated in this first workshop along with World Heritage Site managers from nine countries: Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. The workshop participants shared strategic perspectives on visitor management and areas of opportunity to improve sustainable and inclusive tourism. The workshop highlighted the importance of capacity building for the protection of cultural and natural heritage, as well as intangible heritage, with the support of the communities that are vitally important for its preservation.
