Extraordinary meeting of the Board of Directors to appoint the director of the IRPMZ

On August 25, 2022, the Board of Trustees of the Regional Institute of World Heritage in Zacatecas, Category 2 Center, met in an extraordinary session under the auspices of UNESCO. At the meeting, David Monreal Ávila, Governor of the State of Zacatecas and President of the Board, expressed his commitment to the preservation, dissemination, and enhancement of the World Heritage of Zacatecas and, more generally, of the region of Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Representatives from the federal government included those from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Institute of Anthropology and History, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, and the National Institute of Fine Arts. The UNESCO World Heritage Centre participated remotely, and representatives from the Consultative Bodies, ICOMOS and ICCROM, were present at the discussion.

Representatives from various state agencies also attended, including the Zacatecas Institute of Culture “Ramón López Velarde,” the State Secretariat of Public Works, the Secretariat of Tourism, the Secretariat of Water and the Environment, and the Board for the Protection and Conservation of Heritage Zones of the State of Zacatecas. Representatives from Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Cuba, and El Salvador participated remotely. The meeting addressed key issues for the reactivation of IRPMZ activities, and by consensus, architect Carlos Augusto Torres Pérez was appointed as the new director of this Category 2 Center, one of only two located in the Americas.

Mauro Rosi, head of the Latin America and Caribbean Unit at the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, acknowledged the decision of the Governor of Zacatecas, David Monreal Ávila, to continue the work of the Regional Institute of World Heritage in Zacatecas, noting that its work is fundamental for preserving the subregion's heritage and strengthening the capacities of those who manage and promote these assets. He also emphasized that its function and impact should not only be national or local, but also, and above all, international.

In his remarks as the new director of the IRPMZ, architect Torres Pérez expressed his commitment to the important task entrusted to him, thanking the governor and the other attendees for considering his qualifications. The architect also stated that he will work for the benefit not only of Zacatecas but also of the region encompassing Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
