Summit of Historic Centers of Mexico

On Tuesday, December 10, 2019, the first Summit of Historic Centers of Mexico began, with the participation of representatives from those inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

The main objective is to exchange successful experiences and strengthen strategies for reorganizing, revitalizing, and conserving the country's historic centers.

Eduardo Vázquez Martin, Executive Coordinator of the Mandate of the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, welcomed the participants. The event organizers—Dunia Ludlow Deloya, General Coordinator of the Historic Center Authority of the Mexico City Government; Frédéric Vacheron Oriol, UNESCO Representative in Mexico; and Miguel Ángel Encinas Encinas, General Coordinator of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation—also welcomed the participants. Arturo Balandrano Campos, Director General of Sites and Monuments of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of the Republic, gave the context and importance of recovering the full potential of historical centers in the present, for integral human development.

Ileana Villalobos, Secretary of Urban Development and Housing, on behalf of Claudia Sheinbaum, Head of Government of Mexico City, formally inaugurated the activities of this first Summit, which coincides with the 32nd anniversary of the inscription of the Historic Center of Mexico City and Xochimilco on the World Heritage List. The activities will continue until December 11th, during which the Regional Institute of World Heritage in Zacatecas will participate in the working group: Balance of Uses and Activities in the Historic Centers of Mexico, with a presentation by Dr. José Francisco Román Gutiérrez, Director of the Institute. Vital topics to be addressed include heritage preservation; habitability and repopulation; comprehensive management plans; as well as inter-institutional coordination and social participation.
